Forensic services in Rwanda began in 2005 with the establishment of the Kigali Forensic Laboratory (KFL) through a partnership between the Rwanda National Police and the National Public Prosecution Authority. To address the growing need for advanced forensic capabilities, the Government of Rwanda made significant investments in modern infrastructure and specialist training beginning in 2011. These efforts led to the establishment of the Rwanda Forensic Laboratory (RFL) in 2016. The laboratory was officially inaugurated in 2018 and expanded its services across multiple forensic disciplines. Building on this success and in response to increasing national and regional demand, the Rwanda Forensic Institute (RFI) was established by Presidential Order No. 049/01 of 02/08/2023 to strengthen forensic science and support the fair administration of justice.
